Naniwa Fine 220 Grit Japanese Flattening/Dressing Stone, Grooved, 30cm X 15cm X 2cm

Over time, any sharpening stone will start to wear and the surface will become hollowed out somewhat, and so it will need to be flattened (also sometimes referred to dressing). This stone is made for this purpose. You can wet the surface and rub the stone gently over the top, taking off the high edges and making the stone flat again. You can also spread a small amount of silicon carbide "sand" (see below, under "related products") on the sharpening stone to help the grinding and smoothing. This is a very large and heavy stone so it's useful for even pretty large stones, and includes rubber bumpers for the ends to help steady it while in use.

Warranty: 60-day warranty against manufacturing defects.

Following Peter Nolan’s advice, I decided to purchase a flattening stone to make sure that my whetstones stay flat... Not being quite sure what to get, I followed Paul’s advice of “bigger is better”, and I very glad I did.
This is a heavy and large flattening stone, made to sit on the counter as you pass the whetstone over it. It’s large size makes for quick and easy work. While it’s realtvely expensive, it’ll certainly last a lifetime, making it a very worthwhile purchase.

I have this product that I purchased from Paul. I was a little apprehensive at first because I have been using diamond plates for 4 years to flatten my water stones. I sharpen professionally, so every day I need to flatten water stones. I can't believe how effective this product is, I will not be buying any more diamond plates, which are also more expensive. This flattening/dressing stone is quite big so it is very easy to lay the stone on top with some water on the surface and manoeuvre the stone around as I flatten. An absolute must for folks who sharpen with Japanese Water Stones. Thank you Paul for carrying this and other exceptional products.
