Straight from consumer feedback, EdgePro has created a new sharpening platform for smaller blades that works on Apex and Professional models. This smaller platform allows more flexibility with smaller blades including knives with thumb studs to retain the precision sharpening you expect from their products. The attachment measures 2 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick which will protect the main platform of the machine. It includes an adjustable miniature guide plate to accommodate small knives of varying widths. In their instructional videos, Ben mentions building a riser block and this Small Knife Attachment is an adjustable riser block.

Definitely solves the one issue I had with the Edge Pro system but not without bringing its own warts/quirks to the game:

    1. There is a single thumbscrew to tighten together the three pieces (new top metal plate, plastic riser and Edge Pro base). Two of those slide around while you adjust positioning for the knife blade height before tightening. The plastic riser should be closely aligned with the front of the base. Now try getting that all sorted out while holding a knife in there for top plate positioning. Sure, I'll adapt to it in time, I just hope I don't lose a finger first. This also discourages re-positioning for blade width changes as you move to the tip of the blade which you really should do. If I was going to a lot of small knives at once, I would likely use painters tape to 'lock' the riser plate to the base plate and then the thumbscrew would just loosen the top positioning plate.

    2. The plastic riser plate is made out of some extremely low friction plastic (which makes the above problem worse) that may even be 'self healing' to a certain degree. The instructions state that it is expected that this will get hacked up and damaged over time. I do not see replacement plates available with a quick search but I don't see why I should have to re-buy the metal positioning/tightening plate each time this happens. That thing is solid, no way is it going to wear out. If I could get replacement plates I would hope they would be priced in the $7-10 range, appropriate for a consumable.

    3. The riser plate reduces your sharpening angle by 1 degree( i.e. 21 degrees becomes 20). You likely don't care unless you use Japanese knives (thinner blade in general) and especially if you sharpen Japanese style emphasizing a single edge. In this case, you may want to think about whether you want to try and adjust post height to compensate or not.

    4. How hard is it to put a drawing of the attachment assembled on the base in the instructions? There are two other diagrams of the individual parts. The verbal is a bit confusing with it's references to 'away from you', 'front', 'back', and the like.

    5. I would have appreciated getting some sort of small carry case/bag. Now I have this thing with it's 3 parts floating around in my case or the original positioning plate and its thumbscrew (they're different) floating around. Sure, I have them in a ZipLoc bag but the part edges are sharpish so it'll all be strewn everywhere again soon. Just an attention to detail thing that seems to be a general Edge Pro failing in my opinion like some of the above points.

If you got to here and are now thinking 'crap, I'm not buying that', you forgot about the five stars. This product does what it claims and does it EXTREMELY well. It just has some drawbacks that I thought would be worth pointing out.
