A nice basic steel. The same model that comes in the standard Wusthof knife sets, so you know it works just fine, though it's smaller in diameter and an inch shorter than my best-selling model 4473, so if you have a larger/longer knife (10" or above) that might be a better model for you, but this one will still certainly do the job for many years for most knives.
