This is the same as a carving knife, only shorter. It's the same thin and narrow blade, but in a handy 6" length so it can be used as an all-around "utility" knife for small slicing/dicing jobs or even as a small chef's knife (some people like using utility knives as their everyday knives, for things like chopping small veggies and meats).
