Here's the Messermeister story, direct from the company itself:

"'Messermeister: A Premier German Cutlery Company,' was established in 1800, in Solingen, Germany, and brought to America in 1866 by German immigrant, August Klinkermann. Today, Klinkermann's great grandson, Bernd Dressler, and his wife Debra own the company. Distribution was re-established in the United States in 1984 after being absent from the US market since 1888, when Klinkermann returned to Germany. Widely used by professional chefs, these knives are now entering the kitchens of home cooks and food enthusiasts worldwide. "Messermeister" knives are still manufactured in Solingen, Germany under the design guidance of Bernd and Debra Dressler. Together with their dedicated employees in Ojai and their national sales force, the Dresslers remain committed to their promise of bringing the highest quality cutlery products to the market, without ever letting prices drive their quality. In 2000, Messermeister launched it's new elité edge on its forged knife lines. The Meridian elité and the San Moritz elité. These forged knives are made from a high-carbon, molybdenum/vanadium steel, and slice/dice/cut food easily due to the special three-step sharpening and hand polishing of the edge. The elité edge makes them the sharpest forged knives on the market today."

These knives have very sharp edges, featuring superb traditional German engineering and construction coupled with the Japanese-style fine hand-polished 15-degree angle for extra sharpness and cutting and fine slicing performance. Their edge is precisely ground and polished. See the official Messermeister illustrated sharpening guide (PDF file) for yourself.

Fancy finishes and trendy looks and marketing are fine (and these ARE fine looking knives mind you) -- but these guys seem to really put the effort and money into the blade and edge and it shows. Made from the same hard steel as virtually all other high quality forged knives on the market these blades can take an edge and hold it for a long time. But getting a quality factory edge is crucial otherwise it's just a big chunk of metal, right?! And so the edge and blade design is Messermeister's pride and joy. Their mission statement even states "to present the sharpest edge and to never let price drive the quality of our knives and other cutlery related products". In other words, they don't skimp, but you're not paying for expensive marketing campaigns and shiny logos, so the knives can be very good values, especially at the sale prices I offer. And if you really lose that beautiful edge and the steel doesn't help anymore? Messermeister stands behind their knives: they'll re-grind your knife for free (just for the cost of return postage). Fine construction quality and beautiful balance and overall engineering mean they'll provide a lifetime of service.

Messermeister Meridian Elité Series:
Featuring forged blades, a familiar traditional look, and a long-lasting, comfortable and nearly indestructible handle/grip. Beautiful and very sharp knives -- truly professional-level tools! Caution: these knives have extra thin hand-polished razor-sharp edges for incredible cutting and slicing performance, and so chopping through bones will damage the fine edge (in other words: don't use fine tools like these as cleavers!) All feature forged high-carbon stainless steel blades with the unique Messermeister "Elite" edge -- "the sharpest available today." Made in Solingen, Germany.

Messermeister Four Seasons Series:
Quality at very affordable prices. Featuring High Carbon no-stain X55 CrMo V14 Molybdenum Vanadium Tool Steel, Stamped 3/4-Tang blades for strength and durability; nearly indestructible ergonomic molded santoprene handle. Suitable for household and professional use. Excellent alternatives to cheaper mass-produced Italian and German brands such as Sanelli and Victorinox/Forschner. Made in Solingen, Germany.
