Waffle makers are one of those devices that you just can't skimp on. Get a cheap one and it just won't have enough power to bake them quickly, which is what helps give you a crispy waffle. Also, the extra power is needed so the grill surface temperature can rebound quickly so you can keep pumping out the waffles quickly, and so they bake uniformly and correctly (otherwise the outside will be done before the inside is completely baked). A cheap waffle iron will make bad waffles, and it'll make them slowly -- no fun. And of course to be be powerful, such a device has to be well-built to take the heat generated by all that wattage.
